Crowns Q & A

What are crowns?

Dental crowns are custom-made caps that cover the entire visible portion of your tooth. They serve two functions: restoration and protection. Crowns rebuild the shape, size, and color of damaged and decayed teeth. They also protect weak teeth from further damage and act as a barrier against bacteria.

What can crowns treat?

Crowns restore portions of your teeth that dental fillings can’t. Dr. Sackser often recommends crowns to patients who have:

  • Severe tooth decay
  • Cracked or broken teeth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Teeth worn down by grinding
  • Teeth with large fillings
  • Weak teeth
  • Teeth treated with root canal therapy

Crowns also support dental bridges, which restore your smile when you have one or more missing teeth.

Are there different types of crowns?

While crowns come in many materials, including metal, resin, and gold, Dr. Sackser offers full porcelain crowns at Mineola Smiles. Porcelain is a sturdy, long-lasting material that he can color-match to the shade of your teeth. Once placed, porcelain crowns look no different than the rest of your teeth. In most cases, they last 5-15 years with proper care.

How are crowns placed?

It usually takes two visits to your dentist to place dental crowns. During your first, Dr. Sackser examines your teeth for signs of decay and damage. He then removes any decay before placing your crown. Next, he prepares your tooth for your crown by filing and reshaping it. This step ensures that your crown looks just like your natural teeth.

Before you leave Mineola Smiles, Dr. Sackser takes impressions of your tooth to serve as models for your crown. Crowns take 2-4 weeks to make, so he’ll probably fit you with a temporary crown to protect your tooth in the meantime.

When you return to the office, Dr. Sackser removes the temporary restoration and replaces it with your custom-made crown. He checks the crown to make sure it’s comfortable and fits correctly before cementing it in place.

Crowns look and function like natural teeth. Brush and floss them like your natural teeth.
