Teeth Whitening Q & A

What causes teeth discoloration?

The best oral hygiene in the world may not be enough to prevent your teeth from staining. As you age, your teeth naturally darken and turn a brownish yellow color. However, the following factors can contribute to tooth stains:

Tooth staining foods and beverages, such as red wine, coffee, black tea, and dark berries, have been known to darken your teeth and turn them yellow. Sugary drinks like soda may also cause tooth stains.

Tobacco use

Smoking cigarettes or chewing tobacco is not only unhealthy for your lungs and heart, it can also stain your teeth.

Certain medications, including drugs used to treat asthma and high blood pressure, have been linked to yellowing teeth.

Overuse of fluoride treatments, including fluoride-based mouthwash and toothpaste, can cause your teeth to stain.

Poor oral hygiene

Brushing twice a day and flossing regularly can help you achieve a brighter, whiter smile.

If you’re suffering from discolored teeth, teeth whitening at Mineola Smiles can help restore its brightness.

How does teeth whitening work?

Zoom is a tooth whitening system that removes stains from your enamel and dentin to reveal a healthy, gorgeous smile. The whitening gel is made up of 25% hydrogen peroxide to remove stains. The gel is then activated by the Zoom Advanced Power Chairside Lamp, which removes years’ worth of tooth stains from your teeth in 45 minutes to an hour.

What happens during a teeth whitening appointment?

The first step in the tooth whitening process is to examine your teeth, ensuring there are no unprotected cavities, defective fillings, or tooth decay. Next, Dr. Sackser will coat your teeth in the Zoom whitening solution.

Once the lamp activates the hydrogen peroxide in the Zoom whitening solution, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin, breaking down difficult tooth stains without compromising the integrity of your tooth structure.

This whitening process is performed in three 15-minute intervals, totaling approximately 45 minutes. However, individual treatment times may vary depending on your gag reflex and tooth sensitivity levels.

In addition to in-office tooth whitening, Zoom provides custom take-home kits for patients who want to maintain their results on their own time. When combined with a healthy oral hygiene routine, these take-home trays will help your bright, white smile last.
