Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin porcelain shells that are bonded to the surface of your teeth. They can restore the shape or size of a damaged tooth while improving its color. Dr. Sackser offers porcelain laminates, which are even thinner than traditional veneers. As a result, he doesn’t have to remove as much of your natural enamel to place the restoration.

Why should I try veneers?

Veneers don’t just enhance the way your teeth look. They can also improve their function by restoring your bite and the way your teeth fit together. Common reasons to get veneers include:

  • Severely discolored teeth
  • Cracked or broken teeth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Teeth worn by grinding
  • Gapped teeth
  • Uneven teeth
  • Teeth with minor overlaps
  • Chipped teeth

If you grind your teeth or suffer jaw pain, veneers can fix your bite so that it feels more comfortable.

How can I know what veneers will look like in my mouth?

During your initial consultation, Dr. Sackser takes diagnostic impressions, which he then sends to a lab. The lab creates a diagnostic sample that you can see before it’s placed. This diagnostic wax-up, as it’s called, shows what your veneers will look like. Dr. Sackser places them onto a stone model of your mouth, so you can see exactly how they’ll look in your mouth.

How are veneers placed?

To prepare your teeth for veneers, Dr. Sackser removes about a half-millimeter of your enamel. Removing this small portion of your tooth enamel helps make room for your porcelain laminate veneer. Once your teeth are prepared, Dr. Sackser takes impressions of your teeth to create your permanent restoration.

Veneers take 2-4 weeks to create, so you’ll wear temporary veneers in the meantime. These few weeks give you plenty of time to tell Dr. Sackser how you feel about the look and fit of your veneers.

At your final visit, Dr. Sackser places your veneers and cements them in place once they look perfect and feel comfortable.

Dr. Sackser enjoys planning and placing veneers. His top-most goal is to make sure that you feel happy and relaxed every step of the way. To find out if veneers are right for you, call Mineola Smiles today or book an appointment online.
